A STUDY ON GROWTH DEVELOPMENT AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN A RURAL AREA OF KOREA

Abstract
A general Survey of 418 School Children (from 1st to 4th grade) residing in the Dong nae area of Shindong N.lyun and Dong Myun, Choon Seoung Gun, Kang Won Province was conducted from August 20, to 27, 1979, to obtain information about nutritional status, of School Children in a rural area of Korea..
360 Children are selected for hematological tests and 90 children for biochemical tests.
The results of these tests are presented below;
1) Both the mean bray height and mean body weight of these children were higher and heavier than those in the case of the Iowa malnutrition borderline Standards. 100 total tested children was within the 90 percent of Korean Physical Standard height level. 86.0% of boys, 79.30,o¢¥ of girls in weight within the 90 percent of Korean Physical Standard weight level and 7. 1 of boys, 2.6% cf girls in weight less than 80 percent of Korean Physical Standard weight level.
2) The mean hemoglobin level was 12.3g, % 100ml (^2.2) and 48.9 percent of the children were anemic (less than 12g/IDOml among those 6 years old or more). The average hematocrit value was 41.3%(4.6) and 82.8% total tested Children showed below 3406 value on the M.C.H.C. test.
These results showed that the incidence of anemia was high and it displayed hypochromic characteristics in those tested children.
3) The mean values of total serum protein and albumin were 6.92gj100ml and 4.39g/ml respectively.
Especially in Serum albumin value of all Children showed more than 4gj1D0=nl.
4) The mean Urinary ureanitrogen per creatinine ratio was 11. 5 (_4. 8) and 23 percent was in above: 15 ratios.
Considering these results, it was assumed that protein nutrition in these children was relatively good.
